His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic of Ghana, has nominated three persons to be appointed into the Supreme Court of Ghana.
These three Nominees include two judges from the Court of Appeal, namely Justice Bernasko-Essah and Justice Amoah Asante and one renowned Legal Practitioner and former Ghana Bar Association President, Lawyer Tony Forson.
Justice Amoakoh Asante of Ghana’s Court of Appeal happens to be former President of ECOWAS Court who returned home to join the bench after his tenure at ECOWAS Court presidency was over.
As part of constitutional requirements, the nominees would appear before Parliament’s Appointment Committee to be vetted and seek the approval of same before they they can be sworn into office as Supreme Court Justices.
The inclusion of the three Nominees on the bench would leap the composition of Supreme Court Judges from 18 to 21.
The Supreme Court of Ghana is the Apex Court of the land which performs supervisory role over the other courts and the Executive President of the Republic is equipped by the Ghanaian Constitution, 1992, with the power to appoint Justices into this Court.
