Bank of Ghana to Launch New Cedi Banknotes on November 12

The Bank of Ghana will launch upgraded Ghana cedi banknotes, called the Heritage Series, on November 12, 2026, after moving the event from its original November 2 date. The launch will take place at Bank Square in Accra.
Governor Dr Johnson Asiama said the new notes will keep all current denominations—GH¢1, GH¢2, GH¢5, GH¢10, GH¢20, GH¢50, GH¢100, and GH¢200. They will include modern security technology to make counterfeiting harder and help the notes last longer in circulation.
The redesigned currency will also highlight Ghana’s cultural heritage, national identity, and heroes. The Bank says the upgrade will support more efficient and cost-effective management of the country’s cash supply.
The existing banknotes will remain legal tender and will continue circulating alongside the Heritage Series. Dr Asiama therefore advised the public not to rush to exchange or withdraw their current notes before the launch.
The redesign replaces notes that have been in use for more than two decades, reflecting advances in currency technology and changing security standards. Further details on how the new notes will be introduced are expected before the official launch.
