Ghana’s Meteorological Agency (GMet) has warned that a strong El Niño may bring hotter, drier and dustier weather to Ghana from late November 2026 into the first half of 2027.
Most areas are expected to receive below-normal rainfall, though some southern and northern areas may get more rain than usual. Temperatures will likely be higher across most of the country, with the greatest heat stress between February and April 2027, especially in the north.
The dry season may increase the risk of bushfires, water shortages, crop and livestock stress, and meningitis in northern Ghana. However, short heavy rains could still cause localised flooding, especially in low-lying areas and communities along the Volta River.
GMet advised farmers to follow weather updates, use drought-tolerant crops, and avoid bush burning. Residents should stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity in extreme heat, protect themselves from dust, conserve water, and seek medical help for meningitis symptoms.
The Agency will continue monitoring conditions and provide regular updates.
